"National security is not only the task of institutions, but also the shared responsibility of all citizens. Our mission is to ensure stability, integrity and protection of state interests, always guided by the principles of legality, transparency and professionalism. DPP: The roots of the security structures in our country date back to 1944, when the Department for the Protection of the People (DPP, cyrillic: ОЗНА) was established in the then People’s Republic of Macedonia, as part of the Yugoslav security system.
After independence, the operation of the state security service continued within the framework of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).
The service received its reorganized format in the then Directorate for Security and Counterintelligence (DBK).
With the Law on Organization and Work of State Administration Bodies, the Directorate for Security and Counterintelligence continues to operate as the Directorate for Security and Counterintelligence (DBK).
With the Law on the National Security Agency (NSA), adopted on 22 May 2019, the UBK is abolished and its powers are transferred to the newly established and independent NSA. The cessation of the existence of the UBK and the establishment of the new and independent NSA begins on 1 September 2019.
The Agency for National Security (ANS) is an independent and professional institution, established to protect the constitutional order, national security and interests of the Republic of North Macedonia.
Founded in 2019, ANS represents a logical step in the process of reforming the security system, aligned with European and Euro-Atlantic standards. Its responsibilities were transferred from the previous security service – the Security and Counterintelligence Service (SCS, cyrillic: УБК), which existed within the Ministry of Interior.
ANS is responsible for:
-preventing and detecting espionage, terrorism and other forms of violent threats to security,
-monitoring and analyzing national security risks,
-exchange of information with domestic and foreign partner services,
-supporting institutions in implementing security policies.
The Agency operates within the framework of its legal authority, with built-in democratic oversight by the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia and the public.
ANS actively cooperates with international partners and is part of the security architecture of NATO and European institutions.
Our mission is clear: continuous protection of the state, citizens and democratic processes through modern, responsible and fairly implemented security policies.
